The dissertation attempts to demonstrate that the Program Evaluation and review Technique (PERT)/Critical Path Method (CPM) of some modified version thereof, can be developed into an information system design methodology. The methodology utilizes PERT/CPM which isolates the basic functional units of a system and sets them in a dynamic time/cost, precedence and dependency interrelationship network. To monitor the internal activity of the basic functional units, the methodology applies assignment and sequencing algorithms. By providing the means to control the time, cost, assignment, and sequencing of the activities of the basic functional units in a continuous manner, and a way to network them into the desired system, the methodology fulfills the need for a continuous monitoring information system design methodology. An interactive mode PERT computer program was written in PIL/L which runs on the IBM 360/50 Pitt Time Sharing System using the 2741 Terminal. (Author)
