A continuous extraction procedure, employing liquid-liquid partitioning, allows the separation and concentration of pesticides such that parts-per-billion, and even lower quantities of materials, can be determined in samples of various environmental media. The method employs gas-liquid chromatography coupled with an electron-capture detector for quantitation. Chlorinated pesticides, such as aldrin, dieldrin, and endrin can be readily detected at the l-ng level whereas phosphorus pesticides, such as parathion and methyl parathion, are detectable at the 7.5-ng level. The applicability of the described method has also been established for a variety of other pesticides. (Author)
