A Method and Data-Reduction Tables for Determining the Resolution of Camera Systems under Typical Field Conditions

A system is described for evaluating the resolving power of photographic and other optical systems under test conditions typical of their everyday use. The test data thus obtained reflects the effects of atmospheric haze, mount stability, operator focusing error, etc. The 40 x 42 inch test targets, which are based on the 'USAF-1951' design, consist of resolution groups 'minus six' through 'minus one' with line widths varying from 0.56mm through 32mm. To facilitate the analysis of tests performed with the above targets, an extensive set of computer-generated Resolving Power Data Reduction Tables is presented in Appendix C. (Author)
