Performance of Army Engines with Leaded and Unleaded Gasoline. Phase I. Laboratory Testing.

Six different types of Army engines were endurance tested on dynamometers for 125hr each,using three grades of military Federal specification gasoline having typical conventionally leaded,low-lead,and unleaded concentrations of lead antiknock additives,respectively. All six engine types performed satisfactorily on all gasoline blends from the standpoints of (1) catastrophic failure, (2) excessive valve or cylinder wear, (3) engine power output and fuel and oil consumption,and (4) emissions degradation.
