A report detailing the operation of a 5MHz Doppler ultrasonic bubble detector developed for use in detection of venous gas emboli formed in the blood of divers during decompression as well as for monitoring craniotomies,cardiopulmonary bypass equipment and other medical procedures where there is danger of aeroembolism. A precordial sensor employing 1/2inch square resonant transmitting and receiving crystals separated by 2cm and focused 2-7cm retrosternal is employed for the detection of all gas emboli returning in the weins to the right heart and lungs,the precordial sensor being positioned to the left of the midsternal border over the pulmonary artery and right ventricle. Additional monitoring of the peripheral vasculature through the use of specialized probes is also described. (Author)
