Legibility of Alphanumerics at Naval Aircraft Crew Stations. I. The Effect of Number of Digits in Numerals and Type of Instructions on Reading Speed.

Data from nine subjects indicated reading speed increases with increases in digit length of numerals. Reading time was shown to be significantly longer when S expected to be asked to recall his reading than when he was assured he would not be asked. A new dependent variable, viz., 'Absorption Time' was used to represent time required to extract meaning from numerical stimuli. The procedure and dependent variable were selected to: (a) provide data required for a computer simulation of weapons system operator behavior and (b) attempt to approximate more closely in-flight reading processes of Navy aircrewmen.
