A Method for Clearing Warm Fog to Allow Helicopter Support of Ground Forces.

Close air support of ground forces is seriously impaired,if not impossible,under conditions of fog or low stratus. Isolated units are particularly vulnerable to infiltration and attack at such times. An enemy will,of course,recognize this fact,and can be expected to take advantage of the situation whenever it is in his best interests to do so. A capability to dissipate fog and open holes in low stratus sufficiently to allow aircraft and helicopter support of ground forces would be of great tactical value to the Navy-Marine Corps team. Theoretical studies,laboratory experiments,and a review of the state of the art of producing and dispersing small hygroscopic particles indicate that it should be possible to clear fog from an area of several square miles for military operations.
