Application of Military Guns to High Speed Drilling and Excavation in Rock--Project REAM.

In a joint program between the U.S. Army and the Bureau of Mines,military guns have been used to demonstrate a variety of excavation operations in rock. During field tests, 90-mm and 105-mm guns mounted on an M107carrier were used to drill holes,drive tunnel,form a cut in a surface outcropping and break large boulders. A silencer,developed for the 90-mm system and tested underground for the Bureau of Mines tunneling and mining applications,is proposed to allow surface excavation in peacetime with artillery and tank guns.
