The Effects of Observer Control over Visual Information in Classification Performance.

A series of experiments is reported which investigated the effects on performance of observer control over certain information parameters of a dynamic visual display. The results showed that classification performance was enhanced when experienced observers could eliminate and attenuate information. When naive observers were presented with this attenuated information set, their performance was superior to that of a comparable group shown the entire information set. These results were consistent across two different, but related, sets of stimuli; ambient sea noises and ship sounds.
