Seismicity, Secular Strain and Maximum Magnitude in the Excelsior Mountains Area, Western Nevada and Eastern California.

Historic seismicity in the Excelsior Mountains area indicates a constant high level of activity; geological studies show that the area is one of complex crustal fracturing; strain recordings show periods of strain buildup alternating with strain release; epicentral distribution is scattered. These factors, taken together, suggest that the area is one in which a moderate level of tectonic stress combined with a high degree of crustal fracturing lead to strain release by a continuing series of small-to-moderate earthquakes and fault creep.
