Preliminary Assessment of Relative Toxicity of Several Pesticide Compounds in Behavioral Screening Tests.

Four pesticide compounds were tested for detrimental effects on the behavior of rats trained to avoid electric shock in a modified shuttlebox procedure. ED50values ('effective dose'for producing nonresponse in 50percent of the subjects) were determined for Mobam, Abate,Malathion and ENT-27699. The following ED50values were determined in this test situation:Malathion,tested at 30minutes post-injection, 550mg/kg; Abate,tested 1hour post-injection, 500mg/kg;ENT-27699,tested 1hour post-injection, 1000mg/kg; Mobam,tested 15minutes post-injection, 10mg/kg. Control subjects injected with cornoil or with isotonic saline showed no dose-response effect in this test situation, i.e.,they successfully avoided the electric shock by responding during the preshock tone.
