Aplastic Anemia Following Viral Hepatitis: Report of Two Fatal Cases and Literature Review.

The subject of aplastic anemia following viral hepatitis is reviewed. Two cases are reported. Information on 193 patients is summarized. It was found that males were more likely to develop bone marrow failure following hepatitis, but females were much less likely to survive. No other statistically identifiable criteria which might have diagnostic, prognostic or therapeutic value were detected. Possible pathogenetic mechanisms are discussed particularly as they might relate to chromosomal abnormalities. (Author)
