A high-velocity powder gun has been developed and is operational in the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station's Fragment Simulation Facility. The gun has many potential applications for study of the effectiveness of various components of fortification systems (such as soil, wood, fabric, concrete, steel, plastic, etc.) in defeating small-arm munitions and fragment-simulating projectiles. This report documents the design of the gun and presents the results of calibration tests (with nominal 3-g fragments) over the velocity range 0.05 to 0.222 cm/micronsec. The results of 27 penetration tests of cylindrical fragments into dense sand targets are presented. Results are presented in the form of depth of penetration, fragment frontal enlargement, and fragment mass loss versus impact velocity plots.
