Deoxycholate Metabolism in Alcoholic Cirrhosis.

Deoxycholate, a secondary bile acid, is often absent from bile or patients with alcoholic cirrhosis, but the etiology for this abnormality had not been previously defined. This report documents that impaired conversion of cholate to deoxycholate due to deficient 7 alpha-dehydroxylation is responsible for this defect. There was no evidence for deoxycholate malabsorption, rehydroxylation of deoxycholate or cholate substrate deficiency. (Author)
