For certain aspects of the calculus of variations and optimal control theory, the paper of Kurt Friedrichs listed in the title of this report has had a strong influence, both directly and indirectly. The paper is devoted to a brief historical survey of this influence, especially in the area of convex analysis. In addition, a translation of Friedrichs' paper is appended to this report. (Author)
