A joint decision was made by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the N.C. Dept. of Natural Economic Resources to treat Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) in certain areas of infestation with a 20% acid equivalent formulation of the butoxyethanol ester of 2,4-D using impregnated attaclay granules. Surface applications of 2,4-D at this level were found selective for control of Eurasian watermilfoil with a subsequent release of growth of native waterfowl food plants. Little or no adverse effects were observed. Field application of 2,4-D granules (2,4-D BEE and 2,4-D IOE), diquat and Hydrothal resulted in significant control of Eurasian milfoil for the summer season,applied in early July. Time-concentration treatments in the laboratory and growth pools resulted in 99% dieback at an optimum concentration of 1ppm of herbicide for 4days exposure. Herbicide-release studies indicated 99% dieback from attaclay granules at 1ppm. Residues in the water of the growth tanks persisted about 0.1ppm for 2weeks. In moving water this period would be less,depending on the rate of movement or exchange.
