Reconnaissance Level Report of the Belle Fountain Ditch and Tributaries Project, Mississippi County, Arkansas and Dunklin and Pemiscot Counties, Missouri.

Background research of archival and published sources indicated that prehistoric sited dating from the Paleo-Indian period up through the Late Mississippian phases could occur in the study area and that some historic sites in the area could be dated to the early 19th century. Field examination of the project area was conducted by a stratified random sampling scheme and 24 sites were recorded in 10.8 miles of the right-of-way corridor. The selected segments covered approximately 15% of the entire project right-of-way. Only one site had evidence of prehistoric activity while all sites had historic components. The most frequent site types recorded are recent historic refuse and extant domestic and commercial architectural structures.
