An economic analysis was made of a Clean Coke facility designed to process 12.43 million tons per year of Illinois No. 6 coal. The product list included 3.6 million tons per year of form coke pellets, 1.5 million tons of chemical products, and more than 33 trillion Btu of liquid fuel. With a total investment of $1.75 billion and with coke, chemicals, and fuels priced at $150 per ton, $256 per ton (average), and $2.50 per million Btu, respectively, an14 percent return on investment was projected.nBy replacing Clean Coke hydrogenation with an SRC process variation and producing briquettes instead of pellets, the plant investment was reduced by $130 million, and the net result was an improvement in profitability, to a projected return of better thann15 percent.
