The Conflicts Surrounding Family and Children Versus Mission Responsibilities. What are the Impacts on Readiness

When one hires a person one gets the entire person. In addressing the hiring of women in today's expanded and changing job market, employers and policy makers have neglected to consider the 'total' person. What they have focused on is whether the woman can do the job--the 9-5 wrench turning. What they haven't focused on is the job holder as part of an organization that can make other legitimate demands on the employee. The demands as they relate to the military mission require that military members always be ready to meet the mission--along with the weapons systems and equipment. Readiness in the case of military members requires that each person be mentally and physically fit; be disciplined; obedient and responsive to authority; to have attained technical expertise; and lastly be available at all times to command for performance of the mission.
