The influence of the model support system on an ogive cylinder at high angles of attack has been determined in transonic tests. Stings of varying diameter and struts in various orientations were studied. The stings did not alter the development of large side loads resulting from asymmetric vortex separation and had only moderate progressive effects on in-plane forces and moments. Struts supporting the model through its leeward meridian seriously altered normal and side forces and sharply reduced base drag at several combinations of Mach number and angle of attack. A strut supporting the model at its windward meridian (near the base) yielded results like those for the stings. (Author)
