The United States has experienced a decline in the rate of productivity increase relative to the rest of the industrial nations. The high rate of inflation, social trends, government regulations, lack of capital improvement incentives and the low priority given to manufacturing research and development have combined to seriously reduce the capability of U.S. industry to compete in the international marketplace. The United States Air Force Integrated Computer Aided Manufacturing (ICAM) Program was established to spearhead the drive to increase producitvity. The ICAM approach is to establish structured methods and tools for applying computer technology to manufacturing and to demonstrate ICAM technology for transition to industry. To better facilitate this approach the ICAM Definition (IDEF) method was established to better understand, communicate and analyze manufacturing. The objective of this volume is to describe the IDEF methodology being developed and implemented by the ICAM program to define, design and build integrated computer aided manufacturing systems.
