Review and Evaluation of Candidate Virus Tracers for Use in Field Trials

Five virus vaccine candidates, namely measles, mumps, rubella, poliovirus type 1 and Newcastle disease were evaluated for their suitability as virus tracers for use in the field. The candidates were reviewed in terms of the following criteria: (1) safety for release into the environment, (2) host range, (3) latency, (4) stability in the aerosol state and (5) availability of suitable assay systems. Only the poliovirus type 1 and Newcastle disease vaccines were found to satisfy the above criteria. Due to the historical application of Newcastle disease vaccine in an aerosol form and its minimal to negligible pathogenicity for man, this vaccine was considered to be a more suitable candidate than that of the poliovirus type 1 vaccine.
