Three decontaminating agents, calcium hypochlorite (Ca(OCl)2), D-S2, and STB were evaluated to determine their ability to degrade T-2 toxin (3-hydroxy-4, 15 diacetoxy-8-(3-methyl-butyryloxy)-12,13-epoxytrichothec-9-ene). Disappearance of standard T-2 spots on thin-layer chromatographic (TLC) plates were used to determine chemical degradation by the decontaminating agents. Initial experiments were carried out at room temperature at a T-2 concentration of 500 mg/L. Calcium hypochlorite was evaluated at total chlorine concentrations ranging between 200-40,000 mg/L chlorine (Cl)2 over a one-hour contact period. At levels up to 2000 mg/L Cl2, Ca(OCl)2 did not degrade T-2 after one-hour contact time. Concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 ranging between 10,000-40,000 mg/L Cl2 showed T-2 toxin was degraded to some degree during the one-hour contact time, resulting in 4 to 5 spots on the TLC plates. STB at the use concentration slurry showed the formation of 4 to 5 spots after 30 minutes contact, with complete disappearance after 45 minutes. In contrast, D-S2 produced instant disappearance of the typical T-2 spots on the TLC plates. Future work is needed to analyze the intermediate spots found on the TLC and to identify the intermediate products formed by the use of Ca(OCl)2 and STB.
