Dynamics of Head Protection (Impact Protective Comparison of the SPH-4 Flight Helmet to a Commercial Motorcycle Helmet)

The impact protection provided by a commercial motorcycle helmet is evaluated in this report. The motorcycle helmet utilizes an expanded plastic foam liner of 12 mm thickness, which is less than that used in most motorcycle helmets made in this country today. The thickness of the foam is identical to that used in the US Army Aviator's standard Sound Protective Helmet No. 4 (SPH-4). The impact protection provided by the commercial helmet is compared to the protection provided by the SPH-4 aviator helmet.
