For the past several years, the United States government has been using social media platforms as a tool of foreign policy. While the use of social media for this purpose has expanded rapidly, it remains a new and developing field. This occasional paper is an initial look at the ways in which social media can be used, and is being used by the US government as a tool of foreign policy. It includes considerations for policymakers and practitioners who are exploring the utility of these platforms.
