Infrared spectroscopy has been employed to study the reduction of carbon dioxide on supported catalyst films. The investigation included isotopic labeling using deuterium as the reduction gas. Isotopic exchange was observed for both carbon dioxide/D2 and methane/deuterium mixtures. The mechanism of this isotopic exchange involves migration of hydrogen from the support to the rhodium sites, an inverse spillover effect. A key intermediate in the dissociation of carbon dioxide on the supported Rh films was a carbonyl hydride species.
