Interrelationship of Cardiac Index and Hemoglobin Concentration in a Subset of Hyperdynamic Septic Burn Patients

Given a normal cardiovascular system, cardiac output (CO) is greatly increased following resuscitation in patients with major burns (1). Some data indicate that this increase in CO is out of proportion to oxygen demand (2), and it has been postulated that the increase may not even be driven by oxygen demand (3). These complex physiologic relationships were studied using a mathematical model for nonnutrient blood flow (N-NBF, i.e., that fraction of CO excluded from blood tissues oxygen exchange) revised from a previously described model (4), in conjunction with oxygenation-hemodynamic profiles in septic burn patients.
