Cerebrospinal Fluid and Serum Concentrations of Rifampin in Meningeal Tuberculosis after Intravenous Administration

Rifampin given orally was found to cross the blood-brain barrier, and was comparable to ethamputol in the treatment of tuberculous meningitis. Due to the difficulty of administering oral therapy, as most of the patients are unable to swallow properly, intravenous i.v. treatment is needed. The dosage of rifampin administered depends on the concentration of rifampin achieved in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and the duration of this level in the CSF. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of i.v. infusion use of rifampin for the therapy of tuberculous meningitis during the early phase of treatment which is followed with oral therapy.
