Over the past several years, workers from a number of laboratories have explored the fundamental chemistry of pentaborane, B5H9. In our laboratory and that of Gaines and of Onak, these studies led to the preparation and characterization of the B5H8- anion. Insertion reactions into this anion gave rise to the preparation of the new anion B6H11- and improved syntheses of hexaborane. This report contains two principal parts. The first section describes extensions of earlier work on the chemistry of pentaborane. The second section of this report is concerned with much newer aspects of boron chemistry and provides examples of syntheses in areas which have received no or little attention previously. This section is termed non-classical boron chemistry. Reprints (MJM)
