We have synthesized new monomers and polymers that contain 1,2- disubstituted cyclobutene moieties capable of thermal ring-opening to 2,3-disubstituted butadiene groups. Model diamides and polyamides are described here. Thermolysis of the model diamides polyamides are described here. Thermolysis of the model diamides and polymers were monitored by DSC to determine rates and heats of ring-opening and subsequent reaction. These systems offer unique ability to generate new polybutadienes from the model diamides. More important is the ability of cyclobutene containing polymers to function as thermally crosslinkable components of composites and high performance polymers.
