COSPAR (Committee on Space Research) International Reference Atmosphere: 1986. Part 1. Thermosphere Models Forward

The Foreword reviews the historical development of COSPAR International Reference Atmospheres (CIRA) from the first that appeared in 1961 to the 1986 edition. The 1986 edition is being published in two Parts. Part I: thermosphere Models has been published. Part II: Middle Atmosphere Models is to appear during 1989. The thermosphere Part Contains a set of empirical models and a theoretical model which includes the effects of solar and geomagnetic driving forces. In addition there are review chapters on the following topics: Satellite mass spectrometer measurements of composition, temperature and winds; Incoherent scatter radar measurements of temperature, winds and atomic oxygen concentration; Ground-based and spaceborne optical measurements of winds and temperatures Solar wind energy input and the geomagnetic activity effect solar EUV radiances and indices. Appendices include details of the semi-empirical model formulation, Fortran code, and representative tables.
