Trial of a Quantified Mass Rearing Method for 'Toxorhynchites splendens,'

Toxorhynchites splendens were reared for dengue virus isolation in the laboratory. In order to increase production efficiency and reduce inputs of time and manpower, the authors attempted to employ mass rearing methods. Due to high rates of larval and pupal mortality, this method of rearing was discontinued. The reason for the low yield of Tx. splendens with this method is not clear but the author believed that the most likely explanation is the cannibalistic behavior of this species.
