Bilayer covesicles constructed of ammonium ion surfactant 2 and 3 undergo fast p-nitrophenol -p-nitrophenolate prototropic equilibration at the head groups of 2a-c. The functional surfactants are sensitive, reversible, and continuous spectroscopic reporters of local pH conditions are exovesicular and endovesicular surfaces, and of the dynamics of pH gradient decay near pH 4-5.
