Our grand strategy, once easily articulated by the single word, containment, has been superseded and the lack of an unambiguous threat has prompted a fractious debate. Whether the size or our military forces are be based on what is necessary to protect our interests, or on what our politicians deem is affordable depends on our ability to look ahead to see a clear path tor our nation, and define the role the military will play.
