Given the increasing importance of digital image processing, this engineering dissertation explores automatic focusing techniques. These techniques are required when manual techniques are not sufficiently sensitive or when automatic focusing is a necessary part of the digital image processing system. By using digital image processing it is possible to take advantage of the complete information content of a picture. Two-dimensional pictures can be converted into three-dimensional ones. For a given camera lens, the depth of an object is determined solely through the best focusing position.
