Purification of Gram Quantities of C60. A New Inexpensive and Facile Method

Described is an inexpensive and facile method for the purification of up to gramquantities Of C60. The procedure involves the application of a saturated toluene solution of crude fullerenes to a column containing Norit(R)-A (alkaline decolorizing carbon or activated charcoal) and silica gel (1:2 by weight). Within 37 min, the C60 (purple band) begins to elute from the column and the elution Of C60 is nearly complete within 1.2 h to afford 63% yield (of a possible 75% Of C60 in extractable fullerenes) with >98% purity.
