Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Si, and Ti were determined in a series of NationalInstitute of Standards and Technology aluminum and manganese ore and U.S. Geological Survey manganese nodules using both inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectroscopy and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. The two methods of analysis will be compared and contrasted as to sample preparation, difficulty of analysis, cost of instrumentation, and values obtained for the analysis of standard reference materials.
