HKUST is a very young university. It was open in 1991. The founding president asked the Library to established the University Archives to collect important records which document the development of the university.Since 1996, the University Archives has acquired more than 800 linear feet of materials, including meeting minutes, reports, publications, photos, slides, posters, videos, architectural drawings, etc. In order to facilitate the access to these materials, selective items in different formats are being scanned and digitized. They can be accessed via the Digital University Archives. When we receive more and more materials in electronic format in recent years, we realize that there are also records available on university website which should be retained for archival purpose. So we begin to systematically download web documents in 2000. This downloading exercise is scheduled in the summer every year. Last year, our systems colleagues have designed a program to streamline the process. While there are huge national projects working on the archiving of web resources, the target of ours is to capture web documents created by the University. I would like to share with the conference attendees our experience on the web archiving: the workflow, the challenges and our future plan. The presentation also provides an update on the digitization projects of our special collections which include Chinese maps published in the early 20th century and thread bound books.
