PREVENTION OF BIRD DAMAGE TO SEEDS AND SPROUTING WHEAT

Treatment done with 0.5% Blitox, 0.5% Thiram, 0.5% Rogor, dusting of 10% BHC powder and 2% Naphathalene during sowing of wheat and covering of seeds sown in pots each covered with cotton porous cloth and with reflective tape over a height of 1 ft didnot affect the germination of seeds, though it was slow in the initial stages. Per cent seed germination rate recorded as a result of birds' damage ranged from 71.42 to 85.71 per cent resulting in a damage of 2.85 to 22.86% including those of treated/dusted/protected and untreated (control) pots. The performance of these preventive measures in terms of per cent reduction in damage by birds from seedling to sprouting was recorded in the order of Thiram > pot covered with porous cloth > Blitox > Rogor > Naphathlene > 10% BHC Dust > pot covered with reflective tape. Damage was ound to be inflicted exclusively by grainivorous birds.
