Boson Stars and Black Holes in 2 + 1 Dimensions

Recently, Anti-de Sitter spacetime has been attracting great interest, primarily due to its connection with the AdS/CFT correspondence conjecture and because of its peculiar symmetries. In particular, 2 +1 dimensions has become a fascinating testbed for quantum gravity. Previously, nearly all solutions of the Einstein equations were constructed under the existence of multiple Killing fields. Now, based on a special metric ansatz originally put forth in, a whole class of single Killing field boson stars and black holes have been discovered. The first of these were examined in 4 + 1 dimensions, followed by an extension to arbitrary higher odd dimensions, where the requirement that the dimensionality is odd comes from properties of the ansatz. Thus 2 + 1 dimensions remains the last uncompleted piece. This case exhibits many unique features and the stark differences from the higher dimensional results motivate an in-depth investigation into its physical properties.
