Shale gas potential in Europe - and Poland in particular - became the media and think tank phenomenon of 2010. The idea that the European continent could replicate the shale gas exploration success of the US, and transform its internal gas market accordingly, triggered a blizzard of voluminous reports from think tanks, non-governmental organisations and sundry industry consultants - all of whose speculation was repeated almost daily in the mainstream media. The conclusions were that European shale gas potential was considerably inferior to that of the US, would be more expensive to find and, environmentally, almost impossible to produce.
