Collapsing prices threaten CCS optimism

The slump in crude oil prices to under $50/b at the start of this year is denting the hopes of some in the energy industry that carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology will be able to provide a cost-effective solution to the problem of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Last October, one of the world's most ambitious CCS sites opened in Saskatchewan, Canada. The facility at the Boundary Dam station is the first to commercially strip carbon dioxide from an existing coal plant's emissions.
