Le Log

In recent months, I have participated in a number of group sessions during which the attendees look at some logs and determine if they can be used for quantitative formation evaluation. The single requirement for this exercise is that the participants bring complete data sets, including header information, calibration inserts, list of parameters, job chronology, repeat passes, tool information, and very importantly any remark in addition to log traces. It occasionally has occurred that the participants were only able to display plots derived from a corporate digital database. This approach to well log data has some shortcomings. Digital log information cannot be used by itself. Neither can graphical log information (what we commonly call prints). Both need to be used in parallel. This is particularly critical for multiple-run data sets often found when data are acquired while drilling.
