EU legislator says European Commission should aot on BPA despite EFSA advice

French Liberal member of the European Parliament (MEP) Corinne Lepage is calling on the European Commission to crack down on use of bisphenol A (BPA), despite the Dec. 1 opinion from the European Food Safety Authority that the substance does not pose a risk at current use levels. In a statement issued just hours after EFSA published its opinion, Lepage, who is a vice chair of the European Parliament's Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee, said, "The commission was right to ask EFSA to review the effects of BPA. The EFSA's decision is unfortunately not a surprise for me. One wonders what disasters it will take for experts to change their minds."
