摘要

At the start of the decade, the outlook for mid-sized integrated US oil companies such as Occidental, Marathon, Murphy and Hess was not promising. The new breed of supermajors were threatening to squeeze their smaller rivals out of the best upstream opportunities, and national oil companies (NOCs) were emerging as powerful new competitors for assets and acreage. But strategies variously involving aggressive exploration, astute geographical diversification and niche technology plays have allowed these companies toihrive and grow.
