Cultural competence: a systemic challenge to nursing education, knowledge exchange, and the knowledge development process.

Recognizing that mental healthcare service delivery requires inclusion of culturally competent care, the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses (ISPN; 2003) issued a position statement on diversity, cultural competence, and access to mental health care. The recommendations set forth by the ISPN committee included, but are not limited to, the provision of culturally competent mental health care and research that identifies culturally competent mental health interventions.
