Pecan grafting tips, hints and failure

Monte Nesbitt and I are grafting 14 acres of young 'Mohawk' seedlings with the latest USDA varieties and, in so doing, developing a research orchard for future use. We had good luck last year and this year. In 2013 we started late due to the cool weather and slow bud break, but had good luck again. We are using two grafts: the Texas Method Inlay Bark graft and the Four-Flap or Banana graft. The Inlay is best suited for larger 2-inch seedling trees and the Banana is best for smaller one-half-inch trees. We have learned a lot and here are a few of our observations.
