Wow, what a year for pecans. Great start with a big crop in an "off year and good rain to get the season going. In July at the Texas Pecan Growers conference we all knew the crop was big and we had to shake. Nut thinning for reducing crop size in Julyand early August was more important this year than any year from the past. We shook the Texas A&M orchard in late July in hopes of removing all but 40 pounds per tree on 28-year-old trees. We watered as much as we could, splitting our supply between young and old trees. We knew our water was short because we were in a 24-month drought, so weed management was important.
