2008 Pecan Variety Selection

In 38 years with pecans, my most frequent question has been, "What variety should one plant?". It is a tough question because there are so many variables with climate, soil, irrigation and management influence on varieties. A few varieties have stoodthe test of time and are superior. Without a doubt, regular production of quality pecans is the objective; and make no mistake about it, some varieties bear better than others. As we have learned over time, too much production with overcropping can alsobe a problem. Regular production of quality kernels is the key to profits for every grower. Varieties which do not bear are a negative money sink. Varieties or seedlings which do not bear more than 500 pounds per acre every year are a big problem.
