Current harvest started early, progressing rapidly

Harvest has moved along at a fairly rapid clip this season after an early start in much of the country. A few Texas growers actually gathered their first 'Pawnees' during the last week of August, which they noted was their earliest ever harvest. Mostother areas of the country are also reporting early crop maturity. A large supply of pecans this season has exerted considerable downward pressure on prices paid to growers. The current "off-year" crop was predicted to be 308 million pounds in USDA's first forecast for the season issued in October. Since that forecast, actual harvesting has led many to predict that the crop will be smaller than that; however, overall supply remains considerable. The various components of U.S. pecan supply include carry-in inventories in cold storage, the current season production and imports from Mexico.
